As I will be sharing it with my recent HS grad; since the noises that come out of my mouth sound like Charlie Brown's schoolteacher, Mr. Patton's words are just perfect, and I know will resonate.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33229035.post-13413842198146248722008-07-12T20:01:00.000-06:002008-07-12T20:01:00.000-06:00yeah, this is exactly like something you'd say. I'm sure the high school staff was sweating it at the beginning. Very few commencement speeches involve killing hobos. I've always liked Patton Oswalt, but now I like him a lot more.

Back in 1999, I went to my 20th high school reunion. I realized how much anger I had toward a lot of those people-- how small and mean they were to my brothers and I; we'd moved to the suburbs from the city and hadn't gone to the churches and youth camps and hung at the parties and such with them. We were different.

It was the best thing I could have done. I'd spent years of my life afraid of them and years more angry about he hurt they'd inflicted on me, and walking into the reunion, I realized that they hurt me only as much as I let them. I also realized that in the end, I scared the shit out of them because I was something they were shit-scared to be-- myself.Johnny Yenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06561248220244037567noreply@blogger.com
