The Story of Stuff

There is a very interesting short movie by Annie Leonard that talks about all of the different stuff we go through day to day. I tried to get it to load onto Blogger, but it processed for about 12 hours before I finally killed it... Quoting her web site:

"From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something, it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever."

Thanks to my brother-in-law Chuck for passing this on to me, take a gander and go to Annies web site to check it out.

  1. just about everything I have right now (and for many years) has first belonged to someone else: furniture, cars, clothing. Part of it is a necessity 'cuz I'm cheap and broke: I cannot AFFORD a new kitchen table so I buy one from the Salvation Army. The ugly lil' bedside table in my Cave is probably from the 70's but it works more perfectly than if I'd spent $200 on it for what I use it for.

I haven't watched the movie-- we have a limit on how much downloading/streaming we can do EXCEPT between 3-6 AM, but I'm curious: does she say anything about how we stuff our basements and attics so full of stuff that many of us have to rent STORAGE UNITS for our stuff??

I'm assuming that George Carlin's rant on Stuff appears therein, too...

  2. Thanks for the tip. We're going through another "clear the decks" phase (helped along by seeing 3 rooms worth of crap piled high in the dining room). I recently saw a writer use the phrase "the American fetish for ownership" and I've been examining my own behavior in that regard. It's not pretty.

  5. I can't check it out from here, but just had the Storage Unit chat with our teens as we saw the pile of rubble that used to be a gorgeous house from the 1900's torn down to make room for yet another storage unit. I told them, if you have to put it into storage, do you really use/need it enough to own it? I am a reduce/reuse/recycle kinda gal.
